The D5, originally designated the HGS1, was designed by Hervé Guilpin and Tim Wadrop. The car raced by the Team ATS during the 1981 and 1982 Formula One seasons. For the 1982 season The HGS1 chassis was updated by Don Halliday and designated as D5. It featured an aluminium monocoque and was powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine. During the 1982 season the car was driven by German Manfred Winkelhock and Chilean Eliseo Salazar. Both drivers scored 2 point each finishing 5th in Brazil (Winkelhock) and in San Marino (Salazar).
