Mario Andrettis’ major interest in 1969 season was the USAC championship when he took the title by winning 9 out of 23 races. But occasionally he was provided a seat in works Lotus team in Formula One Grand Prix. Andretti started 3 F1 races in 1969, but retired in all of them. South African GP was his second F1 start at all (after his debut in USA Grand Prix 1968) and first race of the season. He achieved 6th qualifying time ahead of Gram Hill, Team Lotus driver number 1. In the race he had to retire due to gearbox failure on lap 32 when he was third behind Stewart and Hill.
