Chip Ganassi Racing entered four cars in the 2021 Indycar series, driven by Marcus Ericsson, Scott Dixon, Alex Palou and Jimmie Johnson. 46-year old Johnson, seven times NASCAR Cup Series champion, decided to try open wheels racing at the end of his career. He joined Chip Ganassi Racing on a part-time basis in 2021 to drive the road and street courses (and drove full time in 2022). No big victories were expected from him, his appearance was rather a public action to draw more attention to the Indycar and a tribute to the famous racer. Johnson lived up to expectations, never finishing above 17th place, and finished 26th in the championship, the last among regular entrants.
