Belgian amateur driver Cornelius Bezemer from Antwerp first started in the Dakar Rally in 1982 in Land Rover, retiring from the race. In 1984 he made another unsuccessful attempt with Land Rover before moving to truck class in 1985 and finishing 20th and last in Pegaso No. 602. In 1990 Bezemer drove Pegaso Troner 2236 for Pegaso Benelux Team. His team with Johan De Bruyn and Joan Verhaegen did not finish the race. Bezemer, born in 1947, has distant Dutch roots, but was born and raised in Antwerp. The Antwerp entrepreneur (and experienced in everything that has to do with boats) continued to race in Dakar until mid-2010s, initially sitting behind the wheel of his truck himself, but gradually he retrained to become an accomplished co-pilot.
