Russian KAMAZ truck manufacturer company started rally raids in the late 1980s, debuting in Dakar in 1990. In their first years the Russian team used KAMAZ 4310 6×6 in various modifications. The 1991 version of the truck was powered by 10.8 L V8 engine developing 290 hp. KAMAZ entered five 431010C  trucks in 1991 Dakar rally. The team No. 509 with former classic rally driver Vladimir Goltsov with Firdaus Kabirov as co-driver and Nikolay Strakhov as mechanic finished 2nd. All other KAMAZ trucks also finished in top-12. Entry No. 510,  Estonians Yoel Tammelka / Yuhan Anupyld / Enno Piyrsalu was 3rd. No. 511 (driver Vladimir Marchenkov) was 6th, Victor Moskovskikh (No. 513) finished 11th and Evgeny Doronin (No. 512) was 12th.

Evgeny Doronin, born in1961,  was involved in motor racing since 1985 as classic rally co-driver. In 1987 when  KAMAZ produced first three trucks for rally raids, Doronin was the test driver. He raced for KAMAZ in 1989 – 1992 before retiring to continue his business career. Vladimir Chagin, future seven time Dakar winner, served as a mechanic in Doronin’s crew.
