Dutch driver Hans Stacy, nephew of Jan de Rooy, won the 2007 Dakar driving MAN TGA for Exact-Man team. In the 2008 race he was allocated number 500 as the winner of the previous edition. His co-driver and mechanic were supposed to be Charly Gotlib and Bernard der Kinderen. The rally was cancelled one day before the start, on 4 January 2008, due to safety concerns in Mauritania, following the killing of four French tourists there on Christmas Eve, December 2007. The ASO organised the Central Europe Rally, with a Hungary to Romania route, as the rescheduled and relocated race, which technically is part of the lineage of the Dakar Rally, as the ASO held all entries over to the event. 40 out of 100 trucks entered for the original 2008 Dakar actually took part in the Central Europe Rally. Stacy’ crew for the replacing event was Eddy Chevaillier and Bernard der Kinderen. The event began in Budapest on April 19 and finished in Balatonfüred at Lake Balaton in Hungary on April 26, 2008. Stacy won all 7 stages of the Central Europe Rally and finished 1st overall in the trucks class, 33 minutes ahead of Wuf van Ginkel in GINAF.
