Boris Ivanowski was an officer of the Russian Imperial Guard who went into exile after the Russian revolution and made his way to fame in the 1920s as a racecar driver. He was first seen racing a 748 cc Ratier cycle car 1924 in Paris. Ivanowski was a sports car driver and made a name for himself driving Alfa Romeo, winning the 1928 Spa 24-hour race. He teamed up with Henri Stoffel to drive his SSK Mercedes at the 1931 European Championship races. Stoffel was French Chrysler agent who began racing in 1923. His greatest success came at Le Mans and over the years he developed a reputation of a good, reliable long-distance sports car racer. He was seldom seen at Grand Prix races, being most active at the GP scene in the 1930 and 1931.
In the 1931 Grand Prix season Ivanowski and Stoffel started in two European Championship races – at the Italian and Belgian Grand Prix, finishing 5th both times. In the Italian Grand Prix held in Monza on 24 May 1931, they completed 134 laps, finishing 21 laps behind Giuseppe Campari and Tazio Nuvolari in Alfa Romeo 8C-2300.
