March Engineering begun the 1973 season with hardly any money and ran only one car, for Jean-Pierre Jarier. The car, March 731 was actually the 721G with the radiators moved from the sides to the front of the cars, narrow track suspension, a longer wheelbase and add-on deformable side structures to comply with new regulations. Jarier, who had only one F1 race on his previous record, 1971 Italian GP, struggled with the car and did not finished in 10 races, being able finally to see the checkered flag in the final round of the year, United State Grand Prix, where he was 11th. Jarier combined F1 season with the drive in F2. In formula 2 with March 732 Jarier dominated the season, won seven races out of 12 starts and, despite missed five other F2 rounds, won the championship with a big advantage.
