1973 March 731 Williamson

March Engineering begun the 1973 season with hardly any money and ran only one car, for Jean-Pierre Jarier. The car, March 731 was actually the 721G with the radiators moved from the sides to the front of the cars, narrow track suspension, a longer wheelbase and add-on deformable side structures to comply with new regulations. Jarier also competed in the European Formula 2 championship which he won and missed some F1 races. Young British Roger Williamson, winner of  the 1971 and 1972 British Formula 3 Championship titles, was offered a drive  in the March Engineering works Formula One team replacing Jarier. Williamson retired at his debut at the British Grand Prix, and started next round, the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. On the eighth lap of the race through the high speed esses near the Tunnel Oost (East Tunnel) right-hand corner, a suspected tyre failure caused Williamson’s car to pitch into the barriers at high speed, and be catapulted 300 yards (275 m) across the track, eventually coming to rest upside down against the barriers on the other side. The petrol tank had ignited whilst being scraped along the track, and the car caught fire. Williamson had not been seriously injured by the impact, but was trapped in the car.  Fellow driver David Purley, who witnessed Williamson’s impact, almost immediately pulled his car over on the opposite side of the track, then ran across the live racetrack to assist him. But by the time the first fire engine arrived and the fire was extinguished, Williamson had died of asphyxiation.
