McLaren, unlike many other constructors, in the 1970 played simultaneously on many fields –the team was involved in Formula 1, IndyCar, CanAm and F5000. In designing the new Formula 1 car for the 1973 season, McLaren make the most out of its multiаfaceted experience. Gordon Coppuck,  McLaren chief designer, combined the monocoque of the 1972 Indy 500 winning M16B and the suspension of the M19 F1 racer to create one of the most successful F1 cars ever constructed. A Ford Cosworth DFV engine was used, which was prepared by specialist tuning company Nicholson-McLaren Engines which pushed the DFV output to around 490 bhp. One of the biggest visible differences between Indy M16B and new M23 was the addition of a large airbox to force air into the engine intakes. Danny Hulme and Peter Revson were the main team drivers, with newcomer Jody Scheckter and experienced Jacky Ickx entered as third car drivers in some races. Scheckter started the season behind the wheel of M19A  with 9th place in the South African Grand Prix. Then he had four races in M23, retiring in all of them. His most remarkable race was the British Grand Prix where Scheckter provoked a major accident after the start, in which, in addition to Scheckter himself, 8 more drivers got off.
