The first Formula 1 car for newly established Shadow team was designed by Tony Southgate. DN1 used an aluminum monocoque and was powered by a 2993 cc Ford Cosworth DFV engine. The new team missed first two races of the 1973 season, but its debut in South African Grand Prix was marked by excellent 6th place by George Follmer. American, who raced previously in sportcar racing, took 3rd position in the following race in Spain. He scored no more points in the following races and finished the championship 13th with 5 points. 1973 was his only season in Formula One. Before F1 Follmer raced in USAC Championship cars and Can-Am, winning the 1972 Can-Am season. After F1 he continued in Can-Am, raced also in IRoC and had few races in USAC Indycars and NASCAR.
