The JS27 designed by Michel Tetu was the further development of JS25 with conventional pushrod suspension (hydraulic system was tested but not raced) and honeycomb sandwich monocoque with carbon fiber outer panels. The car was powered by Renault Gordini EF15 engines, but the team got Mecachrome-prepared units, rather than latest engines Renault supplied direct to Lotus. Rene Arnoux and Jacques Laffite drove the car, but 42-years old Laffite later was replaced by Philippe Alliot after his career-ending accident in a British Grand Prix. Laffite achieved two podiums in nine races and scored 14 points. Arnoux collected the same amount during the full season. Laffite was classified 8th in the season’s drivers’ standings while Arnoux was 10th. The only point scored by Alliot in Mexico put him to 19th and position in the championship.
