After a disappointing 1986 season long time Brabham designer Gordon Murray had moved to McLaren. John Baldwin, Sergio Rinland and David North laid out a new car, BT56. The car was powered by the straight 4 turbocharged BMW engine. The BT56 was not a very competitive car, although Brabham drivers Riccardo Partese and Andrea de Cesaris managed to score one 3rd place each (de Cesaris in Belgium and Patrese in Mexico). Italian Stefano Modena, 1987 F3000 champion, being offered a one-off drive for Brabham in the final race of the 1987 Formula One season, replacing Patrese who moved to Williams. Modena was qualified 15th in Adelaide, but with exhaustion before mid-distance.
