The Lotus 107 was designed by new Lotus chief designer Chris Murphy who came from Leyton House after team boss Akira Akagi’s arrest. The 107 looked very similar to his earlier design leading some to say that the new Lotus was simply a rebadged Leyton House. The 107, powered by Ford Cosworth HB engine, replaced the 102B car whose heritage can be traced to the 1990 F1 season. With the drivers pair Mika Hakkinen and Johnny Herbert the Lotuses were competitive at least in the early parts of the races, but reliability was the problem. Hakkinen scored Lotus’ best for several years at the Hungarian Grand Prix where he competed for the final podium position with Gerhard Berger’s McLaren and finished 4th. Mika collected 8 points and was 8th in the final championship classification. Herbert achieved two six place finishes (at Kyalami (with 102D) and at Magny-Cours in 107.
