





In 2014, the F1 world championship saw the introduction of a revised engine formula, in which the 2.4-litre V8 engine configuration—previously used between 2006 and 2013—was replaced with a new formula specifying a 1.6-litre (97.6 cu in) turbocharged V6 engine that incorporated an energy recovery system into its build. So, the F14T was the first turbo powered Ferrari since the Gustav Brunner designed F1/87/88C in 1988. The car was designed by Chief Designer Nikolas Tombazis, along with Rory Byrne who was advising Ferrari and focused on the 2014 regulations since 2012. James Allison arrived at Ferrari only when the car was in its late design stages and therefore had little influence on its core layout. Many technical changes were made, with the KERS and ERS systems working with the 1.6 litre V6 turbocharged engine, an 8-speed gearbox and a more powerful DRS system. The name of the car was chosen by fans in a poll organized by Ferrari. The “14” represents the year of competition, and the “T” reflects the series’ shift to a turbocharged engine formula. In the drivers rostrum Kimi Raikkonen, who came from a two-year stint at Lotus Renault, joined Fernando Alonso. Even with this lineup, the car was not successful, scoring only two podium finishes (both by Alonso) in the entire season. It was also the first Ferrari machine since the Ferrari F93A, from 1993, that failed to score at least one Grand Prix win.
