The Tasman Series (formally the Tasman Championship for Drivers) was a motor racing competition held annually from 1964 to 1975 over a series of races in New Zealand and Australia. Until 1969, the Tasman Formula specified open-wheel single-seater racing cars similar to Formula One cars, yet retaining F1 engine rules that were in effect until 1960. Thus, engines of 2500 cm³ that were obsolete for the contemporary Formula One class were eligible for the Tasman Formula. The Tasman Series races were held in January through to late February or early March of each year, during the Formula One off season. Between 1964 and 1969 under the 2.5 litre Formula, 22 Tasman races were contested in Australia, and 24 races conducted in New Zealand. From January 1970 the formula was changed to F5000.
In the 1965 Tasman Series season, seven races were held, and the Series winner was Jim Clark who won four rounds in his Lotus 32B – Coventry Climax for Team Lotus.
Jack Brabham drove Brabham BT11A powered by Coventry Climax engine for Ecurie Vitesse (actually just the alias for the works Moto Racing Developments team). He won the race at Sundown and was third in the final series’ standings.
