The company founded by Gianpaolo Dallara built their first Formula 3 car named Wolf for Walter Wolf Racing in 1978 which as the renamed Emiliani won the 1980 Italian F3 Championship. The first true Dallara was produced in 1981. In 1985 Dallara designed the F385, their first F3 car with carbon fibre/kevlar and aluminium honeycomb chassis. The car evolved a little bit until 2000 with some updates and revisions each following year. 1997 F3 Dallara, the F397, dominated the F3 season winning British, German, French, Italian and Japanese F3 championships.
1997 French Formula 3 champion was Patrice Gay with 3 victories and 9 podiums in 17 races. Gay drove the F397 powered by Opel for Graff Racing. He was also runner-up in the Macau Grand Prix.
