The Swift 017.n was the sole racing car for the Formula Nippon between 2009 and 2013. American company Swift Engineering, headed by former Japanese racing driver Hiro Matsushita, built 24 chassis. The 017.n was designed by Swift Engineering chief designer Chris Norris. Dutch engineer Casper van der Schoot was the program director. The car was initially intended to compete as of 2009 through 2011, however the run of the race car was extended through 2013. The car was powered by 3.4 L V8 Toyota RV8K or Honda HR-09E/HR-10E engines. 19 drivers representing 12 teams competed in the 2012 Formula Nippon season. The season consisted from 7 rounds and one non-championship race, and lasted from April to November. Three non-Japanese drivers, Joao Paulo de Oliveira from Brazil, Andre Lotterer from Germany and Loic Duval from France competed in the 2012 season.
Japanese Toshihiro Kaneishi, 2001 German Formula 3 champion, raced in 2012 for HP Real Racing Team. He finished the championship 12th with 2 points.
