The F312 Formula 3 car was designed and built by Dallara in 2012 to replace the F308 model introduced in 2008.The designers team of Luca Pignacca, Andrea Toso, Jos Claes and Ferdinando Concari designed the car to meet the new 2012 FIA Formula 3 regulations, which were much more restrictive compared to previous rules, and led to reduced downforce levels. Compared to the previous generation Dallara F308, the F312 features a higher monocoque and a lower nose-section than the outgoing model, with the front dampers and springs being placed inside the tub, a first for a Dallara F3 car, alongside a revised aerodynamic package. The F312 was widely used in Formula 3 racing until 2017 when new generation F317 car was introduced. The F316 is just the slightly updated chassis built for 2016 season.

At the 2016 Macau Grand Prix, most prestigious Formula 3 race that brings together the best drivers from all F3 series at the end of the season, Piquet was 9th.
