



Austrian Steyr company, an arms manufacturer after the World War, began building cars in 1920. Steyr was the largest car manufacturer in the country in the 1920s-30s. The 1922 Targa Florio was the first big race for the Austrian make. Steyr entered one of their first models, the type VI 11/50 hp 6-cylinder 3000 cc touring car for Otto Hieronimus and Eugenio Silvani. A Steyr VI Sport 15/90 hp fitted with a 4.5-L engine was also entered for Gaston Brilli-Peri. Another one Steyr – 7/23 hp model – also started in the smaller Category 1501 to 2000 cc driven by Hermann Rützler. Hieronimus got much success for the Austrian team by winning the 2001 to 3000 cc Category, the most numerous in the race, beating 12 rivals in Itala, Ceirano and Alfa Romeo. In the general classification Hieronimus was 7th among 25 finishers.
