Auto Union AG was an amalgamation of four German automobile manufacturers, founded in 1932 by merging of DKW, Horch, Audi and Wanderer. In the 1934 season Auto Union debuted in Grand Prix racing with their revolutionary rear engined 4.3 liter Auto Union A, also known as the P-wagen (P stood for Porsche). The car was designed under the lead of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, and was built by a specialist racing department of Auto Union’s Horch works in Zwickau, Germany. Ex racing driver Willy Walb functioned as team manager, and four German drivers were selected for the works team – top driver Hans Stuck and the lesser known Hermann zu Leiningen as principal drivers with August Momberger and Wilhelm Sebastian as reserves.
The new German racecars started for the first time in the IV Internationales AVUS-Rennen in Berlin in May 1934. Auto Union entered three cars for Stuck, zu Leiningen and Momberger. Only Momberger was able to finish in 3rd position, while two other cars retired due to technical issues.
German racecars from Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union could be seen racing each other for the first time a week later, in the next German race, ADAC Eiflrennen at Nurburgring. Auto Union entered three Langheck (long-tail) cars for Stuck, zu Leiningen and Momberger. The first German battle ended with a victory for Mercedes – Manfred von Brauchitsh won the race ahead of Stuck. Both zu Leiningen and Momberger retired with fuel leak problems.
