



Italian Paolo Barilla competed in formula racing (F2 and F3000) and sports car since beginning of 1980s, being linked to Minardi in F2. In the 1989 he did tests with Minardi f1 and got the chance to replace Pierluigi Martini at Suzuka that year and afterwards was signed to drive for the team in 1990. In his debut race, 1989 Japanese Grand Prix Barilla qualified 19th but retired on the first lap due to clutch problems. In 1990 Barilla retired from racing and joined his family’s businesses, Barilla Group, an Italian l food company founded in 1877. It is the world’s largest pasta producer.
