2022 Alpine A522 Ocon

The 2022 World Championship saw an overhaul of the technical regulations. These changes had been planned for introduction in 2021, with teams developing their cars throughout 2020. The introduction of the regulations was delayed until the 2022 championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical regulations reintroduced the use of ground effects for the first time since venturi tunnels under cars were banned in 1983. This coincides with a simplification of the bodywork, making the underside of the car the primary source of aerodynamic grip. The other key change were a simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing, and 18-inch tyres with wheel winglets.

Alpine A522 designed by the team led by Pat Fry (Chief Technical Officer) and Simon Virrill (Chief Designer) and powered by Mecachrome-built and assembled Renault E-Tech RE22 engine, proved to be the best performing car outside the first three 9Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes). Team drivers  Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon almost in every race were somewhere in top, but never on the podium. The team beat McLaren to 4th in the constructors’ championship – their best finish since 2018 with Ocon finished the season 8th and Alonso 9th in the Drivers’ standings.

In the first two races of the season, in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the A522 competed in pink livery, instead the usual blue livery, to mark the start of the sponsorship deal between Alpine and BWT.
