The 2022 World Championship saw an overhaul of the technical regulations. These changes had been planned for introduction in 2021, with teams developing their cars throughout 2020. The introduction of the regulations was delayed until the 2022 championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical regulations reintroduced the use of ground effects for the first time since venturi tunnels under cars were banned in 1983. This coincides with a simplification of the bodywork, making the underside of the car the primary source of aerodynamic grip. The other key change were a simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing, and 18-inch tyres with wheel winglets.
The AMR22 is the first car that has been overseen by new team principal, Mike Krack formerly of BMW Motorsport who replaced Otmar Szafnauer who joined Alpine. The car was designed by Andrew Green (Chief Technical Officer), Akio Haga (Chief Designer), Ian Hall (Chief Designer) and Ian Grieg (Head of Aerodynamic Development). The power unit was Mercedes customer engine Mercedes-AMG F1 M13 E Performance 1.6 L. For 2022, Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll were both retained as race team drivers. In late July, Vettel announced he would be retiring from Formula One at the end of the season, so 2022 is his last year in F1. The AMR22 scored 55 points in the season which secured 7th position in the Constructors’ Championship. Vettel was 12th and Stroll 15th with 6th position in the race as best result for both drivers.
