The 2022 World Championship saw an overhaul of the technical regulations. These changes had been planned for introduction in 2021, with teams developing their cars throughout 2020. The introduction of the regulations was delayed until the 2022 championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical regulations reintroduced the use of ground effects for the first time since venturi tunnels under cars were banned in 1983. This coincides with a simplification of the bodywork, making the underside of the car the primary source of aerodynamic grip. The other key change were a simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing, and 18-inch tyres with wheel winglets.
The Ferrari new car name, F1-75, refers to the 75th anniversary since the first Ferrari production car rolled out of the factory in Maranello. The car was designed by the team including Enrico Cardile (Head Engineer of Chassis Area), David Sanchez (Chief Engineer – Vehicle Concept) and Fabio Montecchi (Chief Project Engineer). Rory Byrne was also heavily involved in the design of the F1-75 as technical consultant. The F1-75 was immediately competitive compared to the winless 2020 and 2021 cars. Charles Leclerc took two victories at the first three races of the season – in Bahrain and Australia. At the British Grand Prix, Sainz took pole and won his first Formula One race. At the following race in Austria, the F1-75 took another victory with Leclerc, who achieved his 5th Grand Prix victory. Altogether, the F1-75 scored four wins and 20 podiums from its 22 races.
