2022 McLaren MCL36 Norris Abu Dhabi GP

The 2022 World Championship saw an overhaul of the technical regulations. These changes had been planned for introduction in 2021, with teams developing their cars throughout 2020. The introduction of the regulations was delayed until the 2022 championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical regulations reintroduced the use of ground effects for the first time since venturi tunnels under cars were banned in 1983. This coincides with a simplification of the bodywork, making the underside of the car the primary source of aerodynamic grip. The other key change were a simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing, and 18-inch tyres with wheel winglets.

Designed by James Key (technical director of the team) and powered by Mercedes-AMG F1 M13 V6 hybrid power unit, the MCL36 was driven by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, in their fourth and second year for the team, respectively. Norris scored two fastest laps and one podium finish (3rd at Emilio-Romagna Grand Prix) being the only driver from outside the top three teams to finish on the podium in the 2022 season. Lando finished the season 7th while Daniel was 11th.

The team used the special livery in several races of the year, including the final race of the year at Abu Dhabi. At this Grand Prix the car featured the artwork of Lebanese artist Anna Tangles. Norris finished 6th and scored the fastest lap at this race.
