The 2022 World Championship saw an overhaul of the technical regulations. These changes had been planned for introduction in 2021, with teams developing their cars throughout 2020. The introduction of the regulations was delayed until the 2022 championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical regulations reintroduced the use of ground effects for the first time since venturi tunnels under cars were banned in 1983. This coincides with a simplification of the bodywork, making the underside of the car the primary source of aerodynamic grip. The other key change were a simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing, and 18-inch tyres with wheel winglets.
Mercedes F1 W13 was driven by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, the latter finally was promoted to the team after 3 season in Williams. With the new W13 the Mercedes team proved to be much less competitive than in many previous seasons. Lewis Hamilton did not score a single win first time in his F1 career. Newcomer Russell finally won his first victory at Sao Paulo in the penultimate race of the season. With Russell’s victory in Interlagos, Mercedes’ streak of winning at least one race every season was extended to 11 seasons (the third longest in the sport’s history as of 2024).
