The 2022 World Championship saw an overhaul of the technical regulations. These changes had been planned for introduction in 2021, with teams developing their cars throughout 2020. The introduction of the regulations was delayed until the 2022 championship in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The technical regulations reintroduced the use of ground effects for the first time since venturi tunnels under cars were banned in 1983. This coincides with a simplification of the bodywork, making the underside of the car the primary source of aerodynamic grip. The other key change were a simplified front wing and a sharp new rear wing, and 18-inch tyres with wheel winglets.
The FW44 was the first car to be developed wholly under new team owners, Dorilton Capital, with Jost Capito as CEO. The car designed by François-Xavier Demaison (technical director of the team) and powered by Mercedes-AMG M13 client power unit was the less competitive car on the grid. Driven by Alexander Albon and Nicolas Latifi, Williams scored only 8 points (4 by Albon, 2 by Latifi and 2 by de Vries who replaced Albon at the Italian Grand Prix). Both regular drivers took the last two positions in the Drivers’ Championship table. But close positions in the final standings does not represent the huge gap in performance between drivers. Albon completely outperformed his team-mate being significantly faster and competitive in the races and winning in the qualifications with the score 19 – 2.
At the Italian Grand Prix Albon, after suffering from appendicitis, was replaced by reserve driver Nyck de Vries. Nyck managed to advance to Q2 and qualify thirteenth, ahead of Nicholas Latifi, and finished the race in ninth position, scoring points on his race debut. This spectacular performance helped de Vries to be signed by Scuderia AlphaTauri for the 2023 season.
