1989 Tyrrell 018 Alesi F1AC

Tyrrell 018 was designed by Harvey Postlethwaite and Jean-Claude Migeot. From the technical point of view it was conventional car of that time featured aluminium and carbon fibre monocoque and powered with customer Ford DFR engine. Despite running the underpowered customer engine, the car occasionally demonstrated  good performance, with its slimmest nose among grids being one of the aerodynamically best cars of the season. The team started the season with Jonathan Palmer and Michele Alboreto. Experienced Italian achieved the best final placing of the year, third in Mexico. Tyrrell had its usual problems with sponsorship starting the season with a practically “naked” car. By the French Grand Prix, Ken Tyrrell had found a new sponsor in Camel cigarettes for the race and told Alboreto to end his personal sponsorship deal with Marlboro, a rival brand to Camel. Following Alboreto’s refusal to cut his ties with his sponsor, Tyrrell replaced him with the up-and-coming Jean Alesi. Jean managed to finish fourth in his first Grand Prix (in France) after running as high as second. He scoring points again at the Italian and Spanish Grands Prix and finished the season 9th, while Alboreto who joined Larrousse for the rest of the season was 13th and Palmer 25th.
