1927 Bentley 3L Speed Benjafield / Davis

The 1927 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 5th Grand Prix of Endurance, had quite small number of entries due to economic situation in Europe.  Only 25 cars  arrived this year. Peugeot, Chenard-Walcker, OM and Lorraine-Dietrich (winners of the event for the previous two years) all stayed away, and Rolland-Pilain withdrew a few weeks before the race. The organizers lifted the minimum production required from 10 to 30 cars. A new dispensation for 1100 to 1500cc was to let them have only three seats. Crucially this removed 60 kg of compulsory ballast from them.

The British marque Bentley entered the 24 Hours of Le Mans from the very first race in 1923 and won it the very next year. In 1927 two of three entered Bentley cars retired in  a major accident that involved eight cars. The third Bentley driven by Dr. Dudley Benjafield and Sammy Davis won the race, marking the beginning of a four-year streak of success.
