Due to the political and social unrest in France in May 1968, the 36th Le Mans 24 Hours was postponed until 28-29 September. So, for the only time in the history of the race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was held in September rather than June.
Despite the early retirement of the Matra driven by Henri Pescarolo and Johnny Servoz-Gavin, 1968 was a bumper year for another French manufacturer: five Alpines made it to the finish, with three in the top ten. The works team ran three A220s for Henri Grandsire and Gérard Larrousse, Jean Guichet / Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Alpine engineer André de Cortanze / Jean Vinatier. Several Alpine A210 were also entered by works team and privateers in the 1300cc and 1150cc Prototype classes. The best of A210 were Alain LeGuellec / Alain Serpaggi, they finished 9th just behind the works A220 driven by de Cortanze and Vinatier.
