Due to the political and social unrest in France in May 1968, the 36th Le Mans 24 Hours was postponed until 28-29 September. So, for the only time in the history of the race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was held in September rather than June.
With the withdrawal of the Ford factory teams, J.W. Automotive had bought the rights to racing the GT40. The team was backed by Gulf Oil and cars were painted in its distinctive light blue and orange livery. Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi won the day with their Ford GT40. For Bianchi, the end of the race was extremely difficult. Late on Sunday morning, his brother Mauro had a serious accident at Tertre Rouge. Despite the early retirement of the Matra driven by Henri Pescarolo and Johnny Servoz-Gavin, 1968 was a bumper year for another French manufacturer: five Alpines made it to the finish, with three in the top ten.
