In the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans race the main contenders were Ford, represented by JW Automotive Engineering team, and factory Porsche Ferrari and Matra teams. J.W. Automotive, managed by David Yorke, entered two of the GT40 cars they ran in the previous year’s race. They kept their regular driving combinations: Jacky Ickx / Jackie Oliver and David Hobbs / Mike Hailwood. The race turned out to be a very close contest between Ford and Porsche and featured one of the closest finishes in Le Mans history. When the chequered flag was waved, Ickx was just 120 metres ahead of Hans Herrmann’s Porsche 908. Hobbs and Hailwood finished third 3 laps behind.
