In 1980 Le Mans local Jean Rondeau was making his mark at the 24 Hours, as the first driver-constructor to win the race. After several victories in the GTP class, Rondeau with Jean-Pierre Jaussaud finally took the overall victory at Le Mans. Along with two prototype cars, Rondeau entered the GTP car was driven Belgian endurance racers, brothers Jean-Michel and Philippe Martin who had won the 1979 Spa 24 Hours in a Ford Capri. With no sports-car experience they approached Englishman Gordon Spice as a co-driver. The GTP car was the same as M379B prototype with additional ballast to make it up to the minimum weight required for the GTP class. The Belgian equipage had a very reliable race coming in third, nine laps behind their team-mates and winning the GTP class from the Dorchy/Fréquelin WM eleven laps further back.
