The Group 4 GT class in the 1981 Le Mans would be a battle between six Porsche and BMW privateers. Two BMW M1 cars were entered in the class, from François Sérvanin’s Zol-Auto team and Dr Helmut Marko, the 1971 Le Mans winner. His car carried on the tradition of the BMW Art Car. German artist (and some-time racer) Walter Maurer hand-painted images of Munich on the car. It would be driven by Christian Danner, Peter Oberndorfer and Prince Leopold von Bayern. Four more BMW M1 were entered in other classes – three in Group 5, and one in IMSA GTX. But it was not a good race for cars from Munich, and five of the cars retired after running outside the top-20, and only one of the BMWs finished – the Mq driven by Philippe Alliot, Bernard Darniche and Johnny Cecotto.
