In their new Le Mans Prototype (LMP) racing car, R18, built in 2011, Audi continued to use TDI turbocharged diesel engine but with a reduced capacity of 3.7 litres and in a V6 configuration. For the first time since the 1999 R8C, the Audi Le Mans prototype used a closed cockpit design. The car #2 driven by Marcel Faessler / Andre Lotterer / Benoit Treluyer won the 2011 Le Mans ahead of three Peugeot works cars. Two other Audi R18 – #1 with 2010 winning drivers (Mike Rockenfeller / Timo Bernhard / Romain Dumas) and #3 (Tom Kristensen / Rinaldo Capello / Allan McNish) were out of the race due to accidents.
