Russian Lada team came to the World Touring Car Championship in 2009 as fourth manufacturer alongside SEAT, BMW and Chevrolet. Actually Lada cars (Lada 110) debuted in the WTCC in 2008 with private Russian Bears Motorsport, a team founded by driver and manager Viktor Shapovalov. In 2009 the team got factory status and money and entered three new Lada Priora WTCC cars for Jaap van Lagen, Kirill Ladygin and Viktor Shapovalov. Former British Touring Car Champion James Thompson replaced Shapovalov from round 7. Thompson brought only Championship points to the Lada team for a pair of 6th places at the Imola round.
