Anton Girel, 57-years old Lensovet (Leningrad Provincial Council) driver, set in this GAZ-A car the USSR speed record in 1-km flying start record runs at Zhitomir Highway near Kiev in 1937. He achieved the speed of 129 kph, which was more than 10 kph slower than old Russian Empire record set in 1913. Girel drove the self-made car based on GAZ-A Sport model manufactured at Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ). Girel installed in GAZ-A chassis a four-cylinder in-line GAZ-M1 power unit, which was a copy of the Ford-BB engine. Leaving the engine volume unchanged (3282 cm3), the designer increased the compression ratio to 5.5 units, installed two carburetors and a straight-through exhaust system – four short exhaust pipes, increasing the engine power to 55 hp at 2800 rpm.
Four self-made cars competed in the runs held on 30 September 1937 – GAZ-A modifications of Girel, Zharov and Kleshchev, and GAZ-CACS. The latter was built and driven by Vladimir Tsypulin from Central Automobile Club of Soviet Union (CACS).
