ASK Shteingruda-Kalacheva (where ASK means self-designed car, avtomobil sobstvennoi konstrukcii in Russian) was one of the most unusual Soviet sports cars of the 1950s. The car was built by racing drivers of Moscow Taxi Park No. 7 Zakhar Shteingrud and Leonid Kalachev in 1956-1957. The design was based on a frame from the GAZ-M20 Pobeda passenger car, and the low, streamlined body was made of aluminum sheets. The fuel tanks were located in the base, on the sides of the cockpit. The driver and mechanic’s seats were one behind the other. The GAZ-M20 engine was located at the rear and was connected to the drive wheels by a short cardan shaft. The maximum speed was about 170 kph.
Steingrud and Kalachev drove this car in August 1957 in Burevestnik Championship at Big Minsk Ring, winning the event. Few weeks later during the USSR Championship race at the same circuit Kalachev crashed fatally. The car, apparently, was not restored after this accident.
