Since the end of 1970s Lada cars became the main power in the USSR rally racing. USSR national team competed in many international rallies, including World Rally Championship events, in works VAZ Lada specially prepared for rally by the VAZ plant. Lithuanian Stasys Brundza was a best Soviet rally driver of the 1970s – 1980s. He won USSR Rally Championship ten times in 1971 – 1983, became winner of Tour of Europe rally in 1974, and 3 times class winner of 1000 Lakes Rally. His best achievement in the WRC was  6th place at the 1976 Acropolis rally, driving a VAZ-2103. This is the best result for a Soviet rally driver and a Soviet car in the history of the WRC.

In the 1978 Acropolis Rally Brundza and his co-driver Arvydas Girdauskas finished 10th in general classification, winning 4 points in the manufacturers championship. These were the only points scored by Lada in the 1978 WRC. In the 1978 Brundza took part in two other rounds of the WRC. He retired in the Swedish Rally and finished 20th in the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland.
