



The 1969 German Grand Prix was a combined race for Formula One and Formula Two cars. Along 14 F1 cars, 12 F2 cars were also entered into the race, though they were not eligible to score points. German Gerhard Mitter drove works F2 BMW 269 and was killed in practice at Schwedenkreuz corner due to suspected steering failure. After Mitter’s fatal crash his BMW team partners Hubert Hahne and Dieter Quester withdrew from the race, as did Mitter’s teammate at Porsche in the 1969 World Sportscar Championship season, Hans Herrmann, who drove F2 Lotus for Roy Winkelmann Racing.
