BT49C is the Brabham BT49 specification for 1981 Formula One season. The basic model, BT49, was constructed by Gordon Murray in 1979 and was used in several modifications until 1982. The most significant feature of BT49C was a hydropneumatic suspension system for the BT49C in which soft air springs supported the car at the regulation height for checks while stationary. At speed, where the ride height could not be measured, downforce compressed the air and the car settled to a much lower height, creating more downforce. Nelson Piquet on BT49C won the 1981 World Championship in close battle with Williams driver Carlos Reutemann. Piquet’s team partner Mexican Hector Rebaque was 10th in the Championship scoring 11 points in his last F1 year.
