2006 BMW-Sauber F1.06 Heidfeld

The year marked the first time that BMW had competed as a full team; previously it had only supplied engines. The F1.06  was designed by Willy Rampf, Jacky Eeckelaert and Seamus Mullarkey (chassis) with the powertrain being designed by Heinz Paschen. The car was driven by Nick Heidfeld, who joined from Williams, and Jacques Villeneuve, who had spent one season with Sauber before it was bought by BMW. However, Villeneuve was replaced by third driver, Pole Robert Kubica, before the season finished. The team finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, with 36 points. Both Heidfeld and Kubica brought one 3rd place podium finish each, Villeneuve’s best was 6th. Heidfeld finished the season in the top-10 (9th) in the drivers’ standings. At the Brazilian GP Sauber cars raced with “Danke Michael” sticker on the rear wing during the practice and qualifying sessions, in response of Michael Schumacher’s retirement.
