World rally champion and Dakar Rally multiple winner Carlos Sainz, the father of Carlos Sainz Jr., started his motorsport career in rally and single-seaters simultaneously. In 1981 he won his first rally championship, an inaugural season of the ‘Copa Panda’ one-make rally series launched by SEAT for young drivers. In 1983 Sainz achieved his first victory in formula cars, winning the Spanish Formula Ford 1600 Challenge in van Diemen RF83.
