The ninth season of the FIA Formula E championship began its third generation of technical regulations. The new car, Gen 3, with the new chassis again built by Spark Racing Technology and now powered by two powertrains, with a second one added to the front axle, increasing the maximum power output from 250 kW to 600 kW. The weight of the car was reduced by 60 kg. Increased power and reduced weight saw maximum speeds climb to over 320 km/h.
Nick Cassidy from New Zealand, who launched his racing career in Japan, winning Japanese formula 3, Super GT and Super formula championships in period of 2015 – 2019, began competing in Formula E for the Envision Virgin Racing team starting with the 2020–21 season. He scored his first victory in FE next season and in his third year in the series (2022-23) won 4 ePrix and finished the season runner-up.
