In 2004 Toyota Racing spent the third season in F1, and the team hoped to continue the steady progress with its third car, TF104. But the reality turned out to be far from expectations. Even replacing chief designer Gustav Brunner with Mike Gascoyne in the middle of the year did not save the season for TF104. Four finishes in the points (3 by Panis and 1 by Cristiano da Matta) resulted in disappointing 8th position in the Constructors’ Championship.
