The AP 02 was the further evolution of first teams’s model, AP01, from the previous year. More experience with the car rather than insignificant changes allowed Prost to show some progress after unsuccessful 1998 seasons. Prost kept the drivers duo – Panis and Trulli raced previous season. Olivier Panis who was in his sixth season with the team (including Ligier years) scored two points for being placed 6th in Brazil and Austria, while Jarno Trulli achieved his first podium finish at the European Grand Prix in Nürburgring.
