The Lotus 102B was Team Lotus’ car for the 1991 season. Despite having more than 800 new components incorporated the new car was not sufficiently different from the 102 to justify a new type designation. The major change was the replacement of heavy and unreliable Lamborghini engine by lighter Judd EV V8. The initial Lotus 1991 drivers lineup were Mika Hakkinen, F1 debutant and 1990 British F3 champion, and Julian Bailey, who previously raced for Tyrrell in 1988. But after Bailey’s failure to qualify in three Grand Prix out of first four, he was replaced by Johnny Herbert, who had few sporadic starts for Benetton, Tyrrell and Lotus in 1988 – 1990. Johnny drove only in 8 F1 races in 1991 due to his International Formula 3000 commitments with 7th place at Belgian Grand Prix as his season best result.
