The 2001 was the final season for Prost Grand Prix team. Accordingly, Prost AP04 was the last car constructed by Alain Prost’s company. AP04 designed by Henri Durand and John Barnard was powered by Ferrari V10 engine badged as Acer, the Taiwanese electronics company who was the general sponsor of Prost F1 team. The car was not very fast, but reliable and Prost’s driver number one, Jean Alesi, has finished in all 12 races with the team in 2001, including 3 races in points. But not the car was the major problem. Team faced serious financial problems after leaving of previous title sponsor Gauloises. Gaston Mazzacane, who took the second seat in the team at the beginning of the season brought from Minardi his personal sponsor PSN, but has left Prost after 4 Grand Prix. Then Acer provided the sponsorship but that was not enough to survive. The drivers’ lineup changed completely – Alesi left for Jordan and Mazzacane was replaced by Brazilian Luciano Burti who was fired from Jaguar after four races. Burti himself also did not keep the seat until the end of the season. At Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Luciano crashed into the barriers and was seriously injured. His seat was taken by Czech rookie Tomáš Enge for last three Grand Prix of the year.
