The first Formula 1 car for newly established Shadow team was designed by Tony Southgate. DN1 used an aluminum monocoque and was powered by a 2993 cc Ford Cosworth DFV engine. The new team missed first two races of the 1973 season, but its debut in South African Grand Prix was marked by excellent 6th place by George Follmer. American, who raced previously in sportcar racing, took 3rd position in the following race in Spain. His teammate experienced British Jackie Oliver was nominated as team leader. His best result of the year was 3rd place at the penultimate round in Canada. The messy Canadian Grand Prix was confused by a rain shower and first appearance of a pace car in Formula 1 race. Many believe that Oliver actually won the race but lap-charts were thrown into confusion due to multiple pit-stops and after long debates Peter Revson was declared as the winner.
